Looks like they want people who are obviously in favor of new taxes and screw the opposition. I hope all of you, that are in opposition of new taxes, will get out and inform others to vote no. I hope that you "no more taxes" people get out, make signs and post them everywhere that is legal. There probably will not be an organised opposition to the fire tax so all opposition will be grassroots.

Remember when they said that combining the fire depts. would "save" money? Yea, right. Look up Willits salary and benefit package. Remember the doom and gloom predictions if Measure Q, the school tax, would not pass? Don't fall for the scare tactics and get the word out. NO more taxes, period.

I guess I should have read that a bit more closely. I don't agree with increasing taxes either. Maybe if enough people show up at the volunteer meeting to share their "Don't raise our taxes" view, the group will change their direction. The scare tactics that they are using to get this through is ridiculous.

Just my 2 cents, but a public agency that offers pensions that are better than the private sector gets, then forces taxes on the public to pay for their workers to get 90% pay for up to 40 years of no work, while many of those moonlight other paying incomes while getting those pensions is supremely immoral, and anyone that says otherwise is corrupt and deliberately stealing from others who have less just to pay for a retirement lifestyle they cannot justifiably look you in the eye and say it is "equitable" to the average private sector retiree.

It is my belief that it was supreme irresponsibility starting from the 90's of public sector unions breaking the mandates of public service, to instead end up priortising and publicly selling to new recruits the reason to join is to score a better pension than private sector could dream of, and become the new entitled class, kept in comfort better than those who are forced to pay their own retirement.

Holding us retirees living here on a limited budget at the point of a figurative gun ( if you don't pay for their retirement benefits because you cannot afford the extra taxes, they will come and steal " legally confiscate via fiat" your property to pay for firefighter Franks extra set of jet skis) is what they are pushing, hoping the ignorant emotionally based voters do not take the time to see where the money is actually going to help fund. Yes, I am sore about this point, as I have a retired aunt who couldnt pay all the ever increasing pension covering taxes in Shasta, and lost her home she lived in for 50 years, on a limited income. Basically forced medieval serfdom to keep the ruling class eating cake 2.0.

If 51% of people vote yes on this measure, and it puts hardships to the point of those unable to afford it that voted no, that is so immoral that the system of voting taxes to fund pension liabilities should be abolished. Even the fire depts cannot tell you with a straight face that this is Not about trying to come up with more taxes to pay for pension benefits, because their union managementl deliberately relied on an 8% return of their fund forever( which recent channel 5 expose showed that they deliberately, and with managerial criminal corruption hid and manipulated despite yearly returns that were nowhere near the actual returns they touted during union negotiations for higher pension packages)

At the meeting, ask them if patently unsustainable pension funding was not factored, would they have the budget to keep sugarloaf open, and the answer is yes. See if any of them have the honesty to agree.

I am all for keeping the station open, but taxing poor folk just to keep average pensions that are twice the local retirees income is just evil.

I think they know it's not going to pass easily, that's why they've started in so early trying to rally support. Did anyone else receive the email survey last year from True North Research, asking how much you'd be willing to pay to "support" the Big Bear Fire Authority budgetary shortfall? I received the survey three times. That alone made the survey a joke, but I replied each time that I would support ZERO tax increases. The survey was designed to sniff out just how much in tax increases I'd be willing to pay if I knew XYZ about the fire authority, their services etc. My answer each time was ZERO.

My point is they have already spent OUR MONEY on that survey process to try and figure out how much to fleece us for. Since it was far from statistically useful I can't imagine they got a clear picture of what we're willing to part with, but they knew then and they know now it's going to be a hard sell, particularly to full time homeowners.

Also that survey made NO MENTION to getting rid of any specific station, only that they needed additional dollars to properly fund the BBFA. I'm guessing the Sugarloaf choice was designed to piss off the entire east end and bring us into compliance since we're the ones most likely affected by loosing that station. We're being played big time, but welcome to America 2019.

And someone should remind them they work for us, not the other way around.

The above is a list of salaries for the BB Fire Dept. Here are the top three:

Jeff Willis, Fire Chief With all benefits in the year of 2017 - $319,693.92

Mike Maltby, Assist. Fire Chief $168,226.02 (2017)

Shirley Holt, Senior Finance Officer $158,843.06 (2017)

Wonder what the benefits are for the current year. This doesn't even include the damn pensions these, and others, will be getting when they retire.

MountainArt, CoyotePass, great points, except, I believe that it still takes 2/3 majority to pass a new tax. I think Measure Q, the school issue from the past, actually won a majority but it did not receive the 2/3 vote to pass. I just can't believe that there are so many that are blind and yes, dumb enough to vote for new taxes.

CoyotePass, remind them they work for us? Damn right and please help when the election gets closer to get the word out and make some homemade signs with whatever the tax will be called. I made signs against Measure Q with a simple big red Q within a black circle and a slash through it. Tack them up high, use a ladder, so that the sheep cannot tear them down easily. C'mon people, this is total grassroots participation. The bastards will be very financially prepared while we don't have the money. Let's do this!

Jeff Willis: regular pay: $174,499.87 total pay: $283,474.19

For my salary, the difference of those 2 numbers is what I do above and beyond what I am contracted to do (overload, in my case as a teacher, overtime, for most) How exactly did Chief Willis earn $109,000 (62% of his salary) in overtime?

Maybe off topic, but does anyone know if the fire dept owns or rents the two warehouses they occupy on W Fairway just down from the airport? I'm still trying to figure out what they are doing with all that warehouse space, the main warehouse is huge. Granted it's just off the runway so I suppose that could come in handy, but is that where they do mechanical work, is it all admin, what? It is an expensive piece of real estate whether they own or rent and I never see the big rigs in there so I have no idea.

Has that Station ever been full time staffed? I seem to think it has only been staffed a couple years before they response was from Bear City.

Little suggestion to those coming up this weekend. 330 is most likely going have major delays due to the bridge work, and best to avoid all together. Late last night it didn’t take long for traffic to get backed up thru the lower passing lane due to the one way signal.
