I remember helms bakery from the -1950 in Los angelus. Not only did the bread drawer slide out and the donut drawer slide out and smell like fresh made donuts but our 6th grade class took a flip to the bakery which smells overpowerfully like the truck. We saw bread made. My sister who was younger than I remembered the white bread and the wheat bread being made and her teacher brought dough to class so school children could make a small loaf of bread. The teacher looked at the kids hands and clean hands got white dough and kids with dirty hands made wheat bread. My sister never again ate wheat bread.
I saw a helms bakery truck at a museum in Griffith park. I stood by the back door and remembered the smell as the drawers were opened. After 40 years the smell was just as wonderful as in the 50s when I first smelled it.

I too remember the helms bakery truck growing up in whittier...

The Helms truck was the best. My favorite were the crumb cake donuts. The pound cake was very tasty. They always came right after the milkman. Then in the afternoon the ice cream man.

I just read a whole story about Helms bakery and this beautiful tan and blue vans with those big wooden pull out drawers. Best treat ever when he’d come down our street. Maple bars for me and Mom would always get us a pie.

Yes, Marshall. In the early-ish 70s there was a Helms Bakery van (kind of tan colored) that would blow a weird whistle sound as it cruised down our street. As BBNona recounted, when they opened the vehicle's doors, the aroma was incredible! I would beg my mom for a raspberry jelly-filled ppwdered sugar dusted donut or sometimes a glazed.

Yes Marshall!! I fondly remembered the Helms Man You would put a star in your window and they would stop in front of your house. I remember how wonderful the drawers would smell as they pulled out the drawers. Some had bread, some had donuts and I think the bottom jar had different candies. It was a real treat.

Anyone ever get to experience the Helms Bakery on there street, We called them The HelmsMan. They would show up in a panel van with fresh bread,donuts and other goodies. This would be late 60s early 70s? Someone should do it today.
