Fireworks in Big Bear this year??
Just Thinkin', Sat May 23 2020, 09:07AM

I've got mixed feelings regarding the BB Rotary Club's plans to host their 4th of July fireworks event this year. On the one hand, it would be good for local businesses. On the other hand, a surge of 1000's of visitors up here (on a Saturday night, no less), could certainly place our community at risk. Not only would the Valley risk increased COVID-19 exposure, but due to social distancing, numerous governmental resources are currently spread thin. Does anyone else feel uncomfortable about BB Rotary Club moving ahead with this year's fireworks event?

I thought I remember hearing they had moved it out to September? But my memory's not what it used to be...

September sounds like a much more responsible time to hold the event. And with everything else in life already jumbled around, it doesn't seem all that odd.

I did a quick google search and turned up nothing so maybe what I'm remembering is what SCM ALERT said - the contract gives them the flexibility to move it out to September?

It was discussed in the virus thread a bit. [Click Here] Halloween works, as late as Oct 31st.

City update last night stated that 4th of July is now back on the books, at least at this time. I wasn't happy about memorial weekend, certainly not on board with the 4th En Mass. We sacrificed WAY to much over the last 2.5 months to just throw up our hands and say, what ever happens happens. Complete and utter insanity and BS.

I kept hearing others say September >?< so I was linking to the 'as late as' Oct timeframe allowed.

But yeah, still on for the normal 4th of July.

In Arrowhead, ALA but this out yesterday:

"Due to the San Bernardino County interpretation of State COVID-19 restrictions for large gatherings, the County is prohibiting fireworks shows that involve large gatherings in parks or similar venues. Unfortunately, this means the ALA Fireworks Spectacular must be postponed. We have tentatively rescheduled the show for Sunday, September 6 th of Labor Day weekend."

Pubished yesterday by San Bernardino County (Covid-19 update 5/29/2020:

"With the Fourth of July on the horizon, we want everyone to know that public fireworks displays can still take place. But they can only be viewed from cars and private yards -- we are not yet ready for gatherings in parks and on athletic fields."

Will there also be a show in Lake Arrowhead this year? I would hate for it to be cancelled due to COVID-19. We don't even go to the crowd. We watch it from a street.

They don't need a loophole, just reschedule for a later/safer date.

Now that Big Bear has announced they are doing the show on the 4th, I wonder how new mask rules, COVID cases on the rise, etc will impact that decision. I tend to wonder if they will reverse course on the 4th of July. This topic exploded on the SCM Facebook page (as does anything that we put on Facebook). Everything around COVID seems to be split 50/50. Mask proponents/opponents, 50/50 for/against the fireworks, etc, etc. It always makes for some explosive discussions! But we don't do that here on SCM. We are better than that! Right!

Just saying, can we wait till today’s test results come back before both sides decide to go Hatfield and McCoy on each other? I sure heck don’t want see neighbors dying but it really stink if we climb into bunkers without any bombs dropping.

That part frustrating to me, really don’t understand why they can’t be doing drive Thur testing twice a week or weekly through the hospital at least. My doctor already tested me for both the virus and antibodies test back April when my blood pressure was extremely high at his office. (Same building, different office, lab Corp.) Well before the CDC said it was an indicator of covid-19. Which brings up another subject, why my doctor in Lancaster had test kits but the county of San Bernardino appears not to have enough. Which testing was supposed to be major factor in lifting stay at home orders

They may say to have a mask on your hoo-ha and that is good enough to party in Big Bear and watch fireworks...true that!

With what I saw for supplies in this town today and after speaking with some of the management, Big Bear Lake city council is throwing the locals to the lions once again. There is no way at current status that this valley can handle the normal 100k onslaught so how the heck do they think the valley is going to survive 150K+?? Oh oh oh, city is planning on handing out 14,000 masks that weekend so it will ALL BE OK. WTH is going on with the council. I understand they ALL have financial stake in the valley being open, not necessarily operational, but open is all they seem to care about. To hell with the locals. At least they could grow a pair and if masks are so highly recommended then require them for the weekend, not just pass them out. Out, all of them, Out next election cycle. We need someone in charge that is going to think about us non business owner type locals. I'm a business owner and I believe this is nuts and completely irresponsible of the city. OK, let me have it folks, I'm pissed and I'm ready to debate 😤😤😤.

I'm coming up this Thursday night. I will be bringing up as much as I can, especially from Trader Joe's. I might buy some beer when I am there. I'm sure the transients will make up for my lack of supporting the local economy.

No argument with any of that with exception of PO stock g up before coming up the hill. Fine if you can do that but what about the 20K locals who can't?

Squatch, Tue Jun 23 2020, 06:46PM

Razz, you know by now, this time of year, especially around the holidays, shop on Tues/Wed when the crowds are low and the stores are re-stocked, on the holiday if you don`t like crowds relax at home (bbq?) or perhaps at a friends gtg. It doesn`t HAVE to be stressful, hope you have a great 4th!

Thanks Squatch. Assured that we will be tucked away by Thurs eve with exception of stupid Vacation Renter can't wipe their butt call lol. Fortunately we don't require much which is good as there isn't all that much out there to restock with. And was told today to not expect any improvement before the holiday. Whoo Boy. Fun times.
