Bosun, just having the generator is only half the solution and even then only if you are home at the time. Now to train the doxie squad how to start the darn thing and switch the panel over . Those auto start and switch over systems are great, just don't have 4K to sink into one at the moment. And when I do get home, drag the thing out, hook up what needs to be hooked and lo and behold, its usually for naught as the power pops on just as I get the engine running

i have a bee hove that has developed in the front yard of my Moonridge cabin.

Not sure what the big deal is with the PSPS. I bought a Honda EU3000IS generator 20 years ago and put in my own transfer switch on the breaker panel. No outages in my home in 20 years! Just get a generator, problem solved!

Let's start with PSPS notifications that are accurate. It's inexcusable to announce a date/time, then have the actual outage the day before (as has happened way too many times).

The amount of suffering ive seen 1 individual do because his 02 concentrator only has a few hrs backup is unbelievable. We need solutions for patients like this who are going through the stress of not having electricity. Besides having to call 911.

IMHO the crux of the issue with SCE and BVES is liability and the harm that might ensue if they’re not proactive in shutting down electrons to prevent fire. The utilities have aging infrastructure, a push for renewables, increased public scrutiny whatever they do good or bad, personnel issues like the rest of us, and a huge financial liability for any mishap. The deep pocket is the best pocket in a lawsuit, which is why everyone starts looking at proximity to electric lines. Would anyone else want to run such a flawed business model? The answer is a legislative fix absolving the utilities for a certain amount of liability if they meet certain standards, lack of negligence or willful misconduct. As my dad used to say, no free meals and everything in life is a compromise. Again, IMHO.

If accurate time frames were announced, individuals and businesses could adequately prepare.

SCE and BVES instruct people to keep their fridges closed, consider backup units, etc., but what the companies fail to grasp is that all the advice in the world means nothing if their estimates are so terribly inaccurate.

I asked a dentist friend, "What happens if you're in the middle of drilling a tooth?" This dentist has a backup generator, but there's still a delay before the power transfers off the grid. In that interim, the dentist admitted that patients can be seriously harmed. So SCE and BVES need to improve their accuracy, to prevent "surprise" PSPS outages from happening before the announced times/days. Certainly the technology for improved accuracy exists, but I'm not so sure about "corporate will"...
